In recent years, government initiatives have taken significant strides in addressing the critical issue of organ transplantation. These schemes aim to bridge the gap between the urgent need for life-saving organ transplants and the limited availability of organs. By providing financial assistance and comprehensive healthcare coverage, these programs not only alleviate the financial burden on patients and their families but also pave the way for greater accessibility to organ transplantation.
In this article, we will delve into the various government schemes in India that are dedicated to supporting organ transplantation and the individuals in need of these life-transforming procedures.
The Sushrusha Scheme, launched by the Government of Assam, aims to provide financial assistance to patients who have undergone kidney transplantation. The scheme was initiated on August 23, 2010, and it supports eligible residents of Assam in covering the expenses associated with kidney transplantation and post-transplant care.
To qualify for the Sushrusha Scheme, individuals must meet the following criteria:
Certification Requirement:
In order to be eligible for the scheme, patients must receive certification from a designated Nodal Officer confirming that they have undergone a kidney transplantation procedure.
Eligible beneficiaries of the Sushrusha Scheme receive a one-time financial assistance of INR 1 lakh. This financial aid is intended to assist patients in managing the costs incurred during the kidney transplantation procedure and the subsequent aftercare.
Certain categories of individuals are not covered under the Sushrusha Scheme:
The scheme is applicable only for BPL recipients, receiving organs from live-related donors and such transplants will be conducted in government hospitals. However in the event of the government hospitals not having the capacity to perform such transplants then it may be referred to empanelled private hospitals.
In the event of cadaveric transplants (brain dead), the transplant can be conducted in government or private empanelled hospitals as per the registration of the recipient and availability of the organ in the retrieval centre.
The allotment policy of the Jeevasarthakathe Society (the Government-appointed body to oversee the implementation of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act of 1994) will be followed for preauthorization of the procedure other conditions like BPL/poor recipient is also applicable. .
Anyone belonging to any other category than the BPL category for persons domiciled in Karnataka.
The Delhi government’s Arogya Kosh (Health Fund) aims to provide financial assistance to residents of Delhi who require specialised medical treatments, including organ transplantation. It supports individuals who are unable to afford the high costs of certain medical procedures.
The scheme allows for reimbursement for liver transplants for cadaveric and live donors (related and unrelated).
This scheme is applicable only for CGHS beneficiaries (both adult and paediatric) who have medical conditions like acute liver failure, cirrhosis, liver tumour, etc., that necessitate liver transplants.
The package includes the costs for the following:
