Cancer Research And Advancement In India: Leading Institutions And Clinical Trials

Written by:

Cancer is a major health challenge in India, causing significant illness and death. To tackle this issue, clinical trials are essential for discovering new and improved cancer treatments. These trials not only help in finding better therapies but also provide patients with access to the latest treatments that might otherwise be unavailable. In this article, we will explore some of the leading institutions in India conducting cancer clinical trials and highlight the benefits of participating in these trials. By understanding the importance of clinical trials, we can appreciate the advancements in cancer care and how they are shaping the future of medical science in India.

According to the Lancet Regional Health journal, ‘over the past few decades, India’s participation in global clinical trials has grown, due in part to the size of the patient population, low operational costs, regulatory reforms, and the changing economic environment.’

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a research method used to find the best possible treatment for any cancer. All the best currently available cancer treatments are the result of previous clinical trials. In order to find new, better cancer treatments, clinical trials are compulsory.

Here’s an example of clinical trial

Imagine a patient with an advanced black tumor, typically treated with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. This conventional treatment often leads to moderate success but comes with significant side effects and a lengthy recovery period. Recently, a novel targeted therapy has been developed that can precisely attack cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. This new treatment promises improved survival rates with minimal side effects and a shorter recovery time.

To determine if this new drug works as promised, it must be administered to humans under close supervision and compared to the existing treatment (chemotherapy). This process is known as a clinical trial. During the clinical trial, patients receive the new treatment, and their cancer response is meticulously documented. If the new treatment delivers superior outcomes compared to the old treatment, it will become the new standard for treating advanced black tumor.

Who makes sure that the patient is not harmed by participating in a clinical trial?

All cancer clinical trials in India need approval and monitoring by regulatory authorities approved by the Government of India such as Drug Controller General of India and ethics committees. They watch over these trials closely and make sure that participants are not harmed or put at unnecessary risk as part of the trial.

What are the types of clinical trials available?

Single arm trials

In these trials, all patients receive the new cancer treatment.

Randomized trial

In this trial, half the patients receive the old cancer treatment and half receive the new cancer treatment and these two groups are compared to each other. Which arm one particular patient falls into is completely random.

Benefits of participating in a cancer clinical trial

Participating in clinical trials offers patients access to new drugs and treatments that they might not otherwise have. For example, stage 4 lung cancer patients who only receive chemotherapy typically live less than a year. However, those in clinical trials for targeted therapy or immunotherapy have survived for many years with few or no side effects.

Another benefit is free treatment. Many new cancer treatments are very expensive, sometimes costing lakhs per month. By joining a clinical trial, patients can get these costly drugs at no charge.

Clinical trials also ensure close monitoring. They are approved only after rigorous supervision by government and non-government agencies, so patients receive the best possible care.

Participating in clinical trials helps advance medical science. The effective treatments we have today are thanks to clinical trials conducted in the past.

Who can participate?

All clinical trials have rules about who can and cannot participate. These rules are called “eligibility criteria” but may also be referred to as inclusion/exclusion criteria. The criteria are based on factors such as age, gender, the type and stage of a disease, previous treatment history, and other medical conditions. The eligibility criteria define the patient population that is being studied and are designed to protect the safety of participants in the trial. Because of the criteria, not everyone will qualify to participate in the trial.

Here are some prominent institutions in India that conduct cancer clinical trials:

Tata Memorial Centre (Mumbai):

Clinical research in cancer is one of the avowed objectives of Tata Memorial Centre and DAE funded cancer centres (DAEFCC). Numerous clinical research projects including several randomized clinical trials are currently in progress. The Institutes have a well established Scientific Review Committee and Ethics Committee. The projects will be approved by the Ethics Committee, which comprises members from a wide spectrum of society to include not only oncologists and medical doctors but also special scientists, philosophers and lay individuals. It is only when ethics approval is obtained that a project will be allowed to be undertaken by the investigator.
